Drill seeding is a mechanical method of grass seeding where a specially designed piece of equipment places a seed directly into the soil at the proper depth and spacing. Drill seeding is the only method of grass seeding that directly places the seed into the soil — other methods the seed is spread out on top of the soil. This seeding method can be used as a no-till approach to grass seeding, which leaves the dirt undisturbed — returning it to a self-sustaining ecosystem.
There numerous benefits to drill seeding for environmental restoration purposes. Since the machine directly places the seed into the soil, the amount of seeds needed to fill a large area is decreased because there is little risk of wind blowing them away or birds using the seeds as food. This method also creates a more uniform look across the landscape by virtue of the machine planting the seeds in a more precise manner within a tight spacing tolerance.
Arnold’s Custom Seeding maintains a large fleet of specialized and custom-built equipment to efficiently, effectively and safely reseed land that requires reclamation. Our drill seeding equipment has variable seed containment boxes and can be adjusted to accommodate a wide range of grass seeds. Our machines have had great success increasing the germination rate of notoriously difficult seeds varieties. The limitation of this method is to landscapes where large farming equipment can drive, eliminating hilly areas with steep slopes.
